Market Research - Target audience

Introduction
I have decided to do some market research so that I can find out the opinions of my target audience, this way I will be able to create a magazine that the audience actual wants instead of just what I think they would want.

I have decided to run an online survey as I think this is better as it is more interactive and can be filled in when they are surfing the net or doing other things on there computer (which is regularly). This is better than giving out surveys or posting surveys as these can be disregarded and I wouldn't get anywhere. I also believe that if I hand it out to my friends they may make up their results instead of telling the truth so by doing it this way they won't know who has asked the questions and I won't know who has replied to it.

The survey
I have created the survey using http://www.surveymonkey.com/ as this is a free site and easy to use. I have pasted the link to my survey below

I have sent out the link to some peoples e-mail as this way I would get responses almost instantly

I have also got a link for the survey that i will leave on the blog for people who would like to access it this way.

The results
I am now going to analyse the results from my survey, I had left the survey on my blog for 1 week and I also e-mailed a lot of my friends in order to get the most people to answer my questions, However I was only able to get 7 people to answer my survey. Even though this is a very small amount of people I will still use their views and opinion to help myself create the best magazine that I can for the target audience of teenagers.

This was the first question that I asked, I was just trying to find out if there was a demand for a Hip Hop related magazine. By these results I can tell there is a demand for a hip hop related magazine even if it just targets a niche market.

This was the 2nd question that I asked. this question was designed to take my ideas for names and find out which one the target market would prefer. It shows that either 'Soundwave' or 'The Beat' should be used however the other names are close behind so I think it would be best to create the front cover with 'The Beat' or 'Soundwave'in mind however if these don't work very well one of the other names could be used as through the use of this questionnaire it shows that any of the names I came up with could be used

The third question was about reading existing magazines. I asked this question because I wanted to know which magazine i could base my magazine on and get some ideas from, as this way I would be able to create a professional looking magazine and a magazine similar to one that already sells well. Another reason I did this was because I can get inspiration from an already established R&B/ Hip Hop magazine as this way I would be able to get the genre perfect. I found out that the most frequently bought magazine was vibe and vibe vixen being bought weekly and monthly by 2 people out of the 7 people asked and billboard was bought yearly by one of the people. the other magazines were never bought by all 7 people. this shows that the best magazine to study and base my magazine on would be Vibe and Vibe Vixen.

The fourth question was about the price of magazines. I asked 'how much do you usually spend on a music related magazine?' The most common answer was £1.50 as this got 4 of the 7 votes. 2 people said £2-£3 so if I price my magazine at £1.50 - £3 this will target a price range that most of the target market will be happy to pay

The 5th question was 'How important is the cover image in your opinion. I asked this question to find out where I should focus most of my effort and attention regarding the front cover. The response from 5 of the 7 was 'extremely important' and the other 2 said it was important. This shows that I should really focus on getting my cover image in the right place, to fit in with the genre and with the correct model and location. I need to focus on this and will need to do some research into the possible locations and models that I could use to make the cover image a success.

The 6th question was about the masthead in particular even though it didn't address this in the question itself. 'how important is the font of the text linking in with the genre of music magazine'?. I found out that the majority of the people asked said it was important but not extremely important. This answer linked with the last question shows that when I create my own music magazine I should firstly focus on getting the cover image correct and then focus on getting the font to match.

The 7th question was 'what do you expect to find in a music magazine. I asked this question as I wanted to find out what would be the best to do for the double page spread. I also wanted some idea for the types of things to put on my Contents page. I have found out that the best way to go is to do a double page spread on a current band as all 7 of the people I asked confirmed this. I will however include the others listed in the contents page as all had a good response from the questionnaire.
The final question was 'what do you look for on the front cover of a magazine?' I asked this question as I wanted to find out all of the things that I should include on the front cover of the magazine I am going to create. I have found out that all of the things listed should be included as at least 3 of the 7 showed interested on every single one. I am going to make sure I include all of the things listed below as this will satisfy everyone's needs and keep everyone happy and interested in buying my magazine.
