Naming my magazine

Introduction
I decided to create a mind map of the possible names for my music magazine. I firstly decided on 6 different music genres to focus on (Hip hop, Classical, Pop, Rock, Club,Country/folk) I then thought up different words that related to that type of music and presented it as a mind map.

I have decided that my magazine will be based on Hip Hop / R&B as this is the genre of music i am interested in and have the most knowledge about. This way I think I will be able to create a better magazine compared to a magazine on classical for example as I have no interest or knowledge about classical music.

my magazine will be called one of the following ...
  • Rhythm and Blues
  • The Beat
  • The box
  • sound wave
I think that these are the most suitable names for the genre of magazine that I have decided to go for. I will run a questionnaire to see which of the names are most desirable to the audience as the name of the magazine helps to sell copies.

Preliminary Task

Introduction
As part of my AS media coursework I am required to make the front cover and contents page of a school magazine. in this section I am going to talk about the process I went through in order to create the front cover and contents page. We are required to make the front cover and contents page in a programme called 'Photoshop'.

Front cover
We are required to make the front cover of a school magazine. the magazine needs to have an image of a person or people in a medium close up (waist upwards). It also needs to include a masthead, and text of some sort. My idea was to have an image of someone (from the waist up) writing on a whiteboard and then i could have the text laid out as if they had written it. Here is how I made the Front Cover.

This was the first attempt at creating the idea however it didn't turn out like the idea that I had in my head. I thought this was too plain and quite boring which wasn't what I was going for. I thought that the masthead wasn't very interesting or even a good name for the target audience of teenagers (school-age). The page is also the wrong size for the front cover of a magazine and is orientated the wrong way which a front cover can't be. I really wasn't happy with the outcome so I decided to remake the front cover; with a new name and the idea becoming more interesting and colourful.

This was the second attempt at the front cover. I am much more pleased with this as it is more towards the idea I was going for. The name of the magazine is much better as teenagers can relate to it 'Laugh Out Loud' (a.k.a LOL). I also prefer the background as it is more colourful. i took out the background of the image using the magnetic lasso tool leaving the outline of the student, which I think is a lot more successful. I also took out the pages that the articles would be on as this is what the contents page is for. I also decided to highlight the 'Win a ticket to the social' as magazines like to outline the fact that their is possibility for a prize as this makes it more desirable. I also added a date to the magazine as all magazines have the date they were sold on, which I missed off the first draft. I am much happier with this outcome as I think it is more eye catching and targets it audience a lot better.

Contents page
I then made the contents page for the school magazine. I decided to have this as colourful as the front cover to create continuity. I had the idea for the contents page to have images in a 'postik' note form and the articles to be written in lined paper to link in with the idea of school.

I have created the contents page of the school magazine, I am relatively happy with the outcome. I like the masthead as it is as if someone has written it. I decided not to use the same masthead as the front cover as this takes attention away from the front cover. I used three of the images that I decided not to use on the front cover. I thought that two of the images were to crowded to add text on top of it ,and the bottom one wasn't the type of image I was going for. I really like how the lined paper worked as again it is as if someone has written it which I really like, it also means that the text is straight which is what I wanted.

Conclusion
Overall I am happy with how the preliminary task turned out. as they have turned out exactly as I wanted them to. I am happy that I decided to re-do the front cover as I believe the second draft looks alot better than the first. I can now proceed with main task and create the front cover, contents page and double page spread of a music magazine. I have learnt from my mistakes from the preliminary task and I think that now I will be able to create a professional looking music magazine.

Market Research - Target audience

Introduction
I have decided to do some market research so that I can find out the opinions of my target audience, this way I will be able to create a magazine that the audience actual wants instead of just what I think they would want.

I have decided to run an online survey as I think this is better as it is more interactive and can be filled in when they are surfing the net or doing other things on there computer (which is regularly). This is better than giving out surveys or posting surveys as these can be disregarded and I wouldn't get anywhere. I also believe that if I hand it out to my friends they may make up their results instead of telling the truth so by doing it this way they won't know who has asked the questions and I won't know who has replied to it.

The survey
I have created the survey using http://www.surveymonkey.com/ as this is a free site and easy to use. I have pasted the link to my survey below

I have sent out the link to some peoples e-mail as this way I would get responses almost instantly
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8QVV8RV

I have also got a link for the survey that i will leave on the blog for people who would like to access it this way.

The results
I am now going to analyse the results from my survey, I had left the survey on my blog for 1 week and I also e-mailed a lot of my friends in order to get the most people to answer my questions, However I was only able to get 7 people to answer my survey. Even though this is a very small amount of people I will still use their views and opinion to help myself create the best magazine that I can for the target audience of teenagers.

This was the first question that I asked, I was just trying to find out if there was a demand for a Hip Hop related magazine. By these results I can tell there is a demand for a hip hop related magazine even if it just targets a niche market.

This was the 2nd question that I asked. this question was designed to take my ideas for names and find out which one the target market would prefer. It shows that either 'Soundwave' or 'The Beat' should be used however the other names are close behind so I think it would be best to create the front cover with 'The Beat' or 'Soundwave'in mind however if these don't work very well one of the other names could be used as through the use of this questionnaire it shows that any of the names I came up with could be used

The third question was about reading existing magazines. I asked this question because I wanted to know which magazine i could base my magazine on and get some ideas from, as this way I would be able to create a professional looking magazine and a magazine similar to one that already sells well. Another reason I did this was because I can get inspiration from an already established R&B/ Hip Hop magazine as this way I would be able to get the genre perfect. I found out that the most frequently bought magazine was vibe and vibe vixen being bought weekly and monthly by 2 people out of the 7 people asked and billboard was bought yearly by one of the people. the other magazines were never bought by all 7 people. this shows that the best magazine to study and base my magazine on would be Vibe and Vibe Vixen.

The fourth question was about the price of magazines. I asked 'how much do you usually spend on a music related magazine?' The most common answer was £1.50 as this got 4 of the 7 votes. 2 people said £2-£3 so if I price my magazine at £1.50 - £3 this will target a price range that most of the target market will be happy to pay

The 5th question was 'How important is the cover image in your opinion. I asked this question to find out where I should focus most of my effort and attention regarding the front cover. The response from 5 of the 7 was 'extremely important' and the other 2 said it was important. This shows that I should really focus on getting my cover image in the right place, to fit in with the genre and with the correct model and location. I need to focus on this and will need to do some research into the possible locations and models that I could use to make the cover image a success.

The 6th question was about the masthead in particular even though it didn't address this in the question itself. 'how important is the font of the text linking in with the genre of music magazine'?. I found out that the majority of the people asked said it was important but not extremely important. This answer linked with the last question shows that when I create my own music magazine I should firstly focus on getting the cover image correct and then focus on getting the font to match.

The 7th question was 'what do you expect to find in a music magazine. I asked this question as I wanted to find out what would be the best to do for the double page spread. I also wanted some idea for the types of things to put on my Contents page. I have found out that the best way to go is to do a double page spread on a current band as all 7 of the people I asked confirmed this. I will however include the others listed in the contents page as all had a good response from the questionnaire.
The final question was 'what do you look for on the front cover of a magazine?' I asked this question as I wanted to find out all of the things that I should include on the front cover of the magazine I am going to create. I have found out that all of the things listed should be included as at least 3 of the 7 showed interested on every single one. I am going to make sure I include all of the things listed below as this will satisfy everyone's needs and keep everyone happy and interested in buying my magazine.

My chosen target audience

After conducting some research I am now confident that I can create an image and get an idea of what my target audience will be like.

Target audience theories

Burton's theory of socially and media grouped audiences states that there are 3 ways in which an audience can be seen;
1) where they are described by a particular product for example a 'Guardian' reader
2) where they is a specific audience for a type of media product for example a computer magazine reader
3) where audiences belong to pre-existing groups

'where audiences belong to pre-existing groups' links into another theorist. Hartley described 7 different elements that then create the social position of an individual. these are;

  1. Self
  2. gender
  3. age group
  4. family
  5. class
  6. nation
  7. ethnicity.

Another theorist 'Fiske' added;
  1. education
  2. religion
  3. political allegiance
  4. region
  5.  urban versus rural background.
We can as media producers uses these 'categories' to target an audience we can fit certain individuals into group that fit into the elements described by the product; for example the product of 'mens health magazine' would fit in with only the male gender of an age between 20-60 for example and they need to have certain hobbies and interests in order to want to buy the product. institutions need to take this into account when designing their product for a specific audience.

There are two main methods that Mcquail made to measure the audience for a particular product these are the 'Emperical method' and using a 'Social group'

The Emperical method involves waiting til the product has been consumed then counting the amount of people who have consumed the product and then getting the details of the groups and sub-groups who have consumed the product. This would not be an appropriate method for my product as I want to create the product for the specific audience rather than altering it afterwards or making the market fit in with my product rather than my product fitting in with the market.

Choosing a particular social group to target your product at means taking all of the 7 elements described by Hartley into account and finding a mass or niche group that your product targets. there will be a specific age range specific or mixed gender and will be targeted at people with specific beliefs or interests.

I have now researched into what I need to take into account when deciding upon my target audience so I will now be able to gather together an idea of what the individual will be like who would buy my media product.

Audiences are not blank sheets of paper on which media messages can be written; members of an audience will have prior attitudes and beliefs which will determine how effective media messages are. (Abercrombie)

Analysis of 'Vibe' magazine

I am going to look into the features that 'Vibe magazine has included as I feel this will benefit me as our genre of magazine is the same. I also feel as though conducting some more research into the current successful magazines on the market will only benefit me.

Features of a double page spread

I feel as though I need to look at the typical conventions and the features that need to be included on a double page spread so that I will be able to make a page that is similar to the products that are already on the market.

Features of a contents page

I want to look at the different features that need to be included on the contents page and the conventions of the various music magazines that are already on the market.

I have create a 'Prezi' in order to help me show this research

Features of a front cover

I am going to look at the different features that are included on music magazine front covers so that I can see what I should include.

Colours used in magazines

I have decided to carry on the research on colours by looking at different genres of magazines and the colours that are linked to them so that I can see what are the best colours to use for my own product. I am going to look at the colours of 'the Source' and 'Vibe' magazines because it is the same genre of magazine as my magazine.

The Source front cover

The main colours used on the source front cover are red black and white. I feel these are successful colours for this magazine as they create the effect of a harshness and boldness with the red but there is the effect of the white which brings an innocence and purity to the front cover. This clash of meanings help to create a front cover that fits in well with the genre but also gets the reader thinking. Black has also been used however I feel this wasn't added to create a psychological effect but rather to create a shadowed effect around the text.

However having the white sandwiched between the harshness or the red and black makes the white seem less innocent and more R&B related.

The Source contents page

I think it is good that the colours from the front cover have been carried onto the contents page. I do feel however that the black doesn't create as much as a harsh effect on the contents page and the red seems less harsh and bold but it looks toned down and the contents page doesn't to me create the same effect that the front cover created so maybe a different colour scheme should have been chosen.

The Source double page spread

I feel as though this page is more successful, The red boxes with the white writing really stands out and remind me of the stencils used for writing. This links in with the idea of 'Tags' which is part of the R&B culture. I also feel as though the black writing is easy to read and a good colour to use for ease of reading however there is a lot of black included on this page which can be perceived as dull.

'Vibe' Front cover

I felt as though 'Blue' wasn't as much as an R&B colour as red however I feel as though it worked well for this magazine front cover. I feel as though this colour works for the heading however I don't think it works well for the coverlines as they are quite hard to read.

The black really stands out as a harsh and powerful colour on this page; as the black has been paired with brighter colours I feel as though it brings back the idea of R&B. I feel as though without this is would look more like tops of the pops magazine and less like a serious hip hop magazine.

'Vibe' contents page

I feel as though this page is more effective than the front cover however if I saw this contents page I would think it was more of a fashion magazine than an R&B music magazine. The use of black and white together create a serious and sophisticated look however I feel as though this doesn't work well for this magazine as it doesn't link with the genre as is too different to the vibrancy of the front cover.

'Vibe' magazine double page spread

I feel as though this page brings across the R&B vibe and The boldness of the red dress really brings across a danger vibe and a boldness that the reader could link to the artists personality, whereas the blue writing shows the softer side of the artist.  I do feel however that this is again created through the boldness of the black font but the softness of the grey photos. I feel as though these all fit in with the genre well and they create a sort of miss match effect which is really effective. It also fits in with the front cover which helps the pages to flow through each other.

Conclusion
I feel as though this fits in with my previous research of the colours and their meanings. I thought that red, blue and black would all be good for the genre and it turns out that they have all been used repetitively in the magazines similar to my genre. I have also found out that linking the colours through the pages can be both successful and unsuccessful, so I really need to see if I feel that the colours work on all pages and if not use one of the other chosen colours in the palette. I am going to mainly use dark blue as I feel red may be too harsh and bold for the hip hop, R&B mixture I am trying to create.

Colours and their meanings

Certain colours represent certain feelings and meanings; I have found a website which describes all of these meanings and feelings and have copied the chart so I will be able to use the theory of the colours to choose colours than will link in with the theme and vibe for the magazine that I am trying to create.

Red Color  Red

Red is the colour of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
Red is a very emotionally intense colour. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a colour found in many national flags.
Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent colour to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect colour for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This colour is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity.
Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red is associated with vigour, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

Orange Color  Orange

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
To the human eye, orange is a very hot colour, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus colour, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the colour of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.
Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust.
Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action.
Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolises high quality.

Yellow Color  Yellow

Yellow is the colour of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this col or. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is seen before other colours when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In heraldry, yellow indicates honour and loyalty. Later the meaning of yellow was connected with cowardice.
Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings. You can choose yellow to promote children's products and items related to leisure. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Men usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' colour, so it is not recommended to use yellow when selling prestigious, expensive products to men – nobody will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow Mercedes. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous colour, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Light yellow tends to disappear into white, so it usually needs a dark colour to highlight it. Shades of yellow are visually unappealing because they loose cheerfulness and become dingy.
Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy.
Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy.

Green Color  Green

Green is the colour of nature. It symbolises growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.
Green has great healing power. It is the most restful colour for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a 'greenhorn' is a novice. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the colour of free passage in road traffic.
Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street.
Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional colour of peace.

Blue Color  Blue

Blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolises trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquillity and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolise piety and sincerity.
You can use blue to promote products and services related to cleanliness (water purification filters, cleaning liquids, vodka), air and sky (airlines, airports, air conditioners), water and sea (sea voyages, mineral water). As opposed to emotionally warm colours like red, orange, and yellow; blue is linked to consciousness and intellect. Use blue to suggest precision when promoting high-tech products.
Blue is a masculine colour; according to studies, it is highly accepted among males. Dark blue is associated with depth, expertise, and stability; it is a preferred colour for corporate America.
Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. When used together with warm colours like yellow or red, blue can create high-impact, vibrant designs; for example, blue-yellow-red is a perfect colour scheme for a superhero.
Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquillity, understanding, and softness.
Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

Purple Color  Purple

Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolises power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.
According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colours. Purple is a very rare colour in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.
Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products.
Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings.
Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration.

White Color  White

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.
In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the colour of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate colour for charitable organisations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

Black Color  Black

Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.
Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humour, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious colour (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or grey background to make the other colour's stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colours. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colours – black gives a very aggressive colour scheme.

Conclusion
After reading through these different colours and their psychological description I have decided that the best colours for my magazine are Blue, Red and black. I feel as though these are the right choice for my magazine as the description for the Blue was represented as confidence but it also is linked to the ideas of cleanliness which makes me fell that it will make the magazine look crisp and neat. Red was chosen because it represented power. energy and strength; these fit in well with the genre of my magazine and will help to make the pages powerful and have an edge needed to grasp the genre. Black was chosen because it also denotes power and strength but also it is perceived as an aggressive colour when mixed with a contrasting colour such as red.

Types of font used in a magazine

I am going to look at the types of font used for different types of magazine to see if I can see a common font used or a typical type of font (serif / sans serif, bold, size) to see which one is more commonly used.

Vibe magazine
Vixen (vibe) magazine

The Source magazine
Conclusion
I have found out that...
  • Using different colours can be successful if the correct colours are chosen; this means the colours need to link in with the colour scheme and the genre of the magazine but they must also be easy to read.
  • The heading should be the largest text on the page
  • The cover artists name (if used) should be in a large bold font so that is is one of the primary things that the readers sees.
  • Capital letters can be used constantly as they are easier to read and also fit in with the R&B genre.
  • Sans serif font is better if you are trying to create a harsh and masculine vibe however serif fonts are used for the softer more feminine look.
  • The tagline needs to be easy to read but shouldn't take over the page.
  • The features that will persuade the readers to buy the magazine need to be highlighted in some way for example an increase in font size or a different colour.
  • Having some coverlines larger and bolder than others makes then stand out on the page.
  • The font needs to link in with the genre and the vibe that the magazine is trying to create
I feel as though I can use this research to my advantage and to create a successful and professional magazine.

Price of a magazine

I have decided to conduct some research into the sort of price range used in existing magazines. I want to conduct this because I would like to get a rough idea of the price I could charge for my magazine.

Magazine conventions

I have decided to conduct a small analysis of the typical conventions of existing music magazines. I will be using NME an my example and will discuss the different features that are necessary for a successful front cover

MASTHEAD - The name of the magazine (the masthead) is located at the top of the page to make it easily recognisable. It acts as the logo which will brand the magazine to its company. Each magazines masthead is unique to their magazine so that each magazine is recognisable by its brand name.

TAGLINE/SELLING LINE - This is also unique to each magazine and basically gives the reader a description of the magazine in a short, sweet and punchy line. In NME's case it says 'new musical express' which is what NME stands for.

COVERLINES - These give the readers insight into what is going to be included, they are their to promote the different articles in the magazine and to persuade the readers to want to read them. The coverlines would be carefully chosen as they need to be the most exciting or mysterious coverlines to get the reader interested.

BANNER - this usually conatins information about a FREE CD that is being included or some promotional information such as 'the best music guide included inside' this is there to grab the readers attention and to make them want to learn more

MAIN IMAGE - the main image is usually taken of the artists who are taking up a lot of pages in the magazine 'starring artists'. A mid shot is usually used as this gives the readers an idea of the artists without giving away to much, however a close up can sometimes be used if more emotion is trying to be shown. the strong eye contact from the band is powerful and makes an impact on the readers.

MAIN COVERLINE - This links to the main image; it tells the reader who is being shown, and a quote is usually taken from the featured article in order to get the readers interested in reading more. It is always written in a larger font that the other coverlines so that the readers attentions is brought to it first.

BARCODE, PRICE AND WEBSITE URL - the bar code is there for the retailers so that they can easily scan and sell the product, the price has been included to show the reader which issue they are about to buy and the website URL is solely there to promote the other products that the conglomerate may own that is linked to the magazine.

The typical reader of Look magazine is aged between 18 - 30 as it targets issues that this age group can relate to. The magazine also targets women as there are no articles about men's fashion or sports. The reader must have an interest in fashion as the magazine runs a lot of articles to do with fashion and also the latest shopping tips. she will also enjoy shopping in high street shops such as Top shop, New Look and Dorothy Perkins but also likes to shop online on websites such as Asos and Look's online shop directory.

House style / U.S.P
Look magazine has a very cluttered front cover will lots of pictures and text. The front cover also always has a mid shot of a celebrity who is appearing in an article in that issue of the magazine. The magazine also has the same title on every cover, the title is in a serif font and it always the same size on every cover. each issue is usually very colourful and bright in order to catch the readers eye. it is also very modern and contains lots of images and colours as this will target the age group of 18-30 year old. the magazine is also in A4 size which could be a plus point in that it will stand out against smaller magazines, however being smaller (A5) means it would fit in your handbag. It also advertises right from the front cover, as it shows clothing and the prices of the clothing, this will catch the readers eye as if they see something they like on the front cover they are more likely to keep on reading.

Target Audience
Reader profile:
The typical reader of Vibe magazine is someone who has an interest in R&B or hip hop music as this is what the magazine is centred around. there is no specific sex that this magazine targets however there were some issues 'Vibe Vixen' that were specifically aimed at females as they contained information about Beauty and fashion and female R&B stars such as Ciara.

House style /U.S.P
Vibe magazine is a lot less cluttered than Look magazine for example. the front cover always contains an image of an hip hop or R&B artist for example; Ciara , 50 cent and Akon. The front cover is less cluttered as there are a lot less articles shown (as shown below). n the front cover the title is always highlighted in a colour to make it stand out. this will help make the magazine be noticeable against other competing magazines. the contents page always has the same heading written in the same way. this creates consistency so customers seeing this will be able to link this with the magazine. The double page spread also always has volume written in the same way as the heading in the contents page.

IPC Media

I am now going to research into IPC media as these are a very well known media institution, and also if my magazine was going to be made into a real magazine that would be sold. IPC media would be the institution that would help publish that.

IPC media are the publishing institution of magazines such as 'Look' 'instyle' and 'now'. IPC media (international publishing corporation. They target both men and women's magazines however there are alot more women's magazines under their belt.

They target three main areas these are; men, mass market women and upmarket women.

men - 'IPC Inspire' . This area targets both leisure and lifestyle with magazines such as Horse and Hound and NME, rugby world and decanter.

mass market women - 'IPC connect'. This department mix both women's weeklies such as Look and Now with TV and entertainment brands such as TV times and what's on TV.

upmarket women - IPC south bank . this is a mixture of Luxury fashion, lifestyle and home interests. the magazines range from Marie Claire to essentials and ideal home.

Magazine key concepts (LIIAR)

There are 5 concepts included in (LIIAR) they are;

LANGUAGE - this is the terminology used to describe the subject; media language can usually be found on the front cover of magazines (masthead, coverlines) however they can also be used throughout the magazine.

IDEOLOGY - this links in with the idea of stereotyping; it is the values, ideas and beliefs that represent either individuals or certain groups of people in society.

INSTITUTION -this is the organisation that create different forms of media. one institution can be a conglomerate company such as Time Warner that owns smaller companies. In terms of magazine production the institution is important as the institution needs to be well known such as NME in order for people to want to buy it.

AUDIENCE - these are the individuals or groups that consume the product being produced. In terms of music magazines this is generally aimed at people between 15-25 and the audiences interests are usually taken into account.

REPRESENTATION - all media products represent an idea, or values. This can be through adapting a stereotypical view and ideas about the society we live in. representation can be shown through speech, written content or moving image, however representation can cause controversy and cause upset so a lot of care is taken.

Introduction

As Part of my media coursework I am required to create; a preliminary task of a school magazine's front cover and contents page, I am then going to create a music magazine's front cover, contents page and a double-page spread. I have created this blog in order to record my research into existing magazines and also to be able to show how I started with my idea in the planning process and how I turned this into a successful magazine, to then be evaluated.
